How can I figure out if my iPhone is ...

I want to purchase the apple care plan and it can only be purchased while the phone is under warranty.

Q1. Is there a way to find out the original warranty period by entering the serial number on apple support site?

Q2. If the site allows me to purchase the applecare protection plan then should I assume that my phone is still under warranty? I don't want to purchase the applecare plan and then have Apple tell me that my phone is out of warranty.
