3G randomly can't make or receive calls ...

I have a iphone 3G. After update to firmware 3.1 I am experiencing the following problems.
1. battery life is horrible. I have wifi off, location off, and bluetooth off. Immediately before the update I could get 3-4 days off a single charge. Now I can barely make it through a single day.
2. Phone randomly doesn't work. My phone will display 5 bars of service and I will try to make a call. The phone says 'dialing' but nothing happens and it never connects. If somebody tried to call me during this 'crash' they go directly to voicemail. Only way to fix is to reboot the phone. Again, I noticed this the very next day after updating to 3.1. This is very annoying since I can't tell it is crashed since it actually shows 5 bars of service. I rely on my phone a lot and now have to perform test dials every hour or so in order to make sure my phone is still working. This criples my phone.

Please fix 3.1.
