iPhone auto-brightness definitely not ...

The auto-brightness in my iPhone 3G is definitely not working. It used to work. I used to observe the brightness of the screen altering itself when I used the phone in different light conditions. It was an impressive feature!

Now, I regularly use the phone to read at night in a completely dark room. When I wake the phone, the brightness does not dim, not even a little bit. The screen lights up the whole room and disturbs my partner if I don't go into settings and manually reduce it to minimum brightness. When I'm done reading I sleep the phone. The following day, I go out into the bright daylight, wake up my phone and EVERY TIME it remains at the same minimum brightness setting and I can't see a thing on the screen. I have to manually go to settings and increase the brightness again.

I understand that the brightness setting I have manually selected is supposed to be a median setting, and that the iPhone cannot get the brightness exactly as I want it in every situation. But my screen brightness is not adjusting AT ALL, even in extreme lighting conditions. I definitely have the auto-brightness option switched on, yet it is doing nothing.

Could this issue have any connection to an app I used to use called "Light"? When launched, this flashlight app would automatically increase the brightness to maximum level. As far as I know, the app was discontinued by Apple because of this feature. Is it possible the app has messed up my phone's auto-brightness? Or could there be some other reason why auto-brightness doesn't work?
